Chapter 5: A Reason to Stay

Suzan woke up to the sounds of Bonnie Rupp singing. It was a weird sensation, as if every cell in her body awoke and was ready to start the day. She grabbed her clothes and looked on at the crowded student center, trying to see the bathroom.

All freshman students slept in the student center for the first week–boys in the upstairs lounge and the girls in the downstairs commons. It was a way for the students to get to know each other and find roommates before they were given room assignments.

Suzan didn’t appreciate this at all. She was hoping to get some time to herself, but it was virtually impossible. Even in the bathroom stall, Suzan could barely breath and that was partially because one of the girls smelled like digested tacos; no, it wasn’t just the bathroom.

The rest of the previous day was uneventful. She, Sadie, and Tabatha went back to finish their tests while Whitney explored the campus. That evening only the three met for dinner. That was ok with Suzan because she didn’t particularly like Whitney, but she had to admit the way she saved that girl yesterday was impressive and inspiring.

Thump! Lance awoke from his daydream and spun around to look out his back window. Nothing was there, but he was sure he felt something…

His hand instinctively put the car in drive and he returned to the parking space, opened his door and stepped out to investigate. As he walked behind the vehicle, all he saw was the pavement. There was nothing there. Not a bump, not a hole, he had hit nothing, but he was almost sure that something had wrenched him from the space between realities.

Lance sighed with relief and his heart slowed down. He almost thought he had hit someone while he was thinking about Talia.

He stepped back inside his car and put his seatbelt on, but when he checked his rearview mirror he saw someone sitting in his back seat. Lance jumped as far as his seatbelt would let him.

Lance McElroy trudged to his car. He never felt so humiliated in all his life. The girl of his dreams, his boss, Talia Roberts, was engaged… to his best friend Paul no less. Sure they had been dating for three years, but they fought everyday. That couldn’t be good for a relationship, right?

Lance really didn’t know. He had never had a real relationship before. The closest thing he had to a relationship was the made up ones he created when jerking off at 10 pm.

He didn’t know why he did it; it started when he was younger. He couldn’t talk to girls so it was easier to create a phony relationships, clean up and go to bed. Do people in love fight?

Lance spotted his car on the 2nd floor of a nearly empty parking garage. The December air gripped his knuckles as he held on to his attache case, its handle chilled as he switched hands to dig into his long, wool coat’s right pocket for his keys. With a quick movement, he pulled them and inserted the key into hole. Click. Opening the door, he gently set his case on the passenger seat and ducked into his lowly, old car.

Chapter 4: Making friends and Remote Viewing

The girls marched out of the student center in four lines led by Bonnie and Emma. Suzan thought it was embarrassing. The whole time she thought of a mother duck leading her ducklings. And if that wasn’t enough, Bonnie had them singing a marching song along the way. Emma seemed to be the only one actually singing, loudly, and enjoying it.

The other girls averted their eyes along the path, trying not to look at the guard, who smiled and laughed, as they marched to the east tower. Sadie’s face grew red as Bonnie’s voice grew louder, in hopes of more girls joining in, but the only thing that happened was that Emma’s voice grew louder, which now sounded more like screaming than singing. Eventually Bonnie stopped trying and Emma stopped screaming.

Upon reaching the east tower, Bonnie and Emma opened the double doors, leading the girls inside to a cozy, furnished lobby with couches and chairs and a stone fire place. The girls squeezed as best as they could into the space, but because their were so many, they were shoulder to chest, elbow to knee as all 163 girls pushed and shoved into the tower.

“Ok, y’all,” said Bonnie as she took her place in the center of the room, “The firs part of the test is the written part. There are 1000 questions dealing in logic, mathematics, reading, spatial, pattern recognition, classification, and visualization.”

    Chapter 3: First Perceptions

Today was the day that Suzan and Sadie would leave for school. Professor Schumacher would arrive at 9 to pick them up and they would learn everything there was to know about being a prodigy in their very own school. All in 7 hours from now…

Suzan couldn’t sleep. She lay awake thinking about the interview that she and Sadie had with the Professor a week ago…

    *****

“Now I want you to know that the interview is mostly just a formality,” said Professor Schumacher, “But it is my favorite part. You will most likely be admitted but there are exceptions.”

He handed both of them a pamphlet which described the school’s objectives and even had a map on the back.

‘To pursue excellence in mind, body and soul,’ Suzan read to herself.
