Interview with Daryl Kerns

Hello Writers!

These are questions that I asked my character, Daryl Kerns. I think they are a good start to getting to know your character so I hope you enjoy what I have here. In the comment section, I would love to see links to your character interviews, so if you wouldn’t mind posting them, I would be interested to read them.

Character Questions:

What is your name and physical description (height, weight, age, style)?

My name is Daryl David Kerns. My mom calls me D. D. sometimes. I am 18 years old, 5’10”, 140 lbs. I don’t really have a style. I don’t think it really matters. I wear glasses, typically kaki pants and a button up shirt. I tuck my shirt in, because it looks ridiculous otherwise. I guess I care how I look a little bit. I’m bringing suspenders back into style! I don’t care how long it takes. I’m African American. My hair is a bit hard to control, but I like it poofy. Makes me feel like Albert Einstein.

What is the most significant event in your life?

The most significant event in my life? Ooh boy! That is a doozy! I am an avid paranormal investigator, not like any of those greats you see on TV, but I love to reasearch. I had a very scary encounter with the Mothman. I live in Point Pleasant, WV, by the way. It changed me forever. Kinder, the mothman, battled me for supremacy of my body. That was incredibly difficult, but in the end I won! My mind is my playground. No one can best me there! Now I’m the Mothman, and Kinder is still around. He helps me with my powers, though he has tried to take my body once or twice after. Eh… I got it covered!

Describe your family. Who are your parents (jobs, personality)?

I’m an only child with an only parent. My father left before I was born… So I really don’t know who he is… I don’t really care though. He left, so it doesn’t really matter. My mom raised me alone. We’ve never been rich, but she’s always provided food for me and sometimes a gift when she can. Those things don’t matter to me though. I plan on becoming a top scientist and super hero, so my life is covered.

My mom is a hair dresser, and she also works full time in a retail store called Tavers. It’s a superstore, kind of like Wal-mart. That’s the only way I know how to describe it.

She’s a hard worker. She’s usually tired when she comes home. I do my best to be helpful around the house, but she’s typically on me about classes and keeping my grades up. She’s pretty strict and doesn’t like me going out to the Munitions factory, but it’s my research lab. I need to go and investigate the Mothman… or I did. Now Kinder and I work on gadgets. We’re like Batman and Alfred!

Describe your childhood?

I was bullied a lot. This one kid in particular, Benjamin Howder, always picked on me. I’ve always been the weird kid. No body really wanted to be friends with me. I guess you could say my childhood was pretty lonely… Then I met Samantha… who stabbed me in the back, but later she became my friend. Otherwise my childhood was pretty dull. I’ve never been outside of Point Pleasant, except to visit grandma. She’s still in West Virginia though, so I didn’t go far. We never had a lot of money to do much but live. I want to take care of my mom some day, but my current situation is… It’s not looking very promising.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I’m a paranormal investigator, an inventor, a super hero, and I love comic books. Mostly Batman!

What are your goals for the future?

I want to become a super hero! I have the powers, so why not. I guess I will need some sort of desk job. I wouldn’t mind being a lab assistant or scientist. Maybe a professional paranormal investigator and go on expeditions across the globe. That would be awesome.

Birthday? Where do you live?

May 22, 1985. I live in Point Pleasant, West Virgia. I’ve lived there my entire life.

What is your job?

I am a private in the US Army. It’s not where I thought I would be. In fact I never wanted to join the military. My mom was quite shocked when I “joined”…

All in all, I’ve met some good people and also some not so good people. I hope that my dreams will come true, but it’s looking a bit hopeless. I’m going to do my best to remain positive, no matter who wants to get in my way!

What social class do you belong in?

Well now that I am employed, I guess you could say I’m no longer at the bottom. I guess my mom was somewhere near the bottom. That’s actually a very curious question. I’ve never really thought about it. As a private, I’m making less than 20K per year.

As a supernatural being, what are your strengths and weaknesses? Do you have any allergies?

I don’t have any allergies, but my biggest weakness, as a monster, is when I leave my body it is suseptible to damage. That is why I always have to make sure it is in a safe place before I leave.

In my astral form, I can take on any shape I want as well as change my density. In my ethereal form I can fly and go invisible. In my corporeal form I can touch objects. It drains a lot of my power though, and I need to get back to my body to recharge. I can’t drain completely outside of my body or I will die!

What does your voice sound like?

It’s soft, I suppose, with a little bit of a squeak. I assure you I did go through puberty.

Do you have any heroes?

Batman! Drill Sergeant Foote!

What is your greatest fear?

I’m afraid of killing someone. I’m afraid of what that will do to me as a person. I’m afraid of losing control of my body. I’m afraid of what other people think… Sometimes. I suppose we all have that fear.

What is your philosophy?

Help everyone I can. Be an encouragement. Practice Kindness and Love. Learn as much as I can.

What is success to you?

Success to me is happiness. Whatever that is. Whether I am alone, or with friends. I believe achieving my goals is success too.

What do you despise?

I despise guns. I despise bullies.

Top 3 personality traits?

Energetic; Inquistive; Cautious

How do you deal with stress?

I like to stop what I’m doing and think about something that makes me happy. It used to be Samantha… I guess it still is her… But I doubt I’ll see her again. That makes me sad.

3 things you’re good at and 3 things you’re not

I’m good at research, clowning around, and staying positive.

I’m bad at calming down, reading people, and letting go.
