Chapter 7:

Daryl lay on his bed. He felt something he hadn’t felt before: trapped. This person, Crouse, represented a company that knew everything about him. This was something he never really considered…

He’d thought of the men in black often, but since he went active as the Mothman without any sign of mysterious men roaming the streets, he just figured they were fake. He really wished they were the Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones type…

Kinder finally let up once they got home. After a bazillion ‘I told you so’s’ he went quietly into Daryl’s subconscious.

The ceiling was particularly bright right now. His table side lamp did a great job of lighting up the place… He didn’t want to think about it, how violating it was to have some entity watch you for four years and you didn’t even know it!

He was intrigued though. It was the next logical step in his super hero career: team up with other heroes; fight a common bad… Kinder didn’t believe any of it. Maybe he was right. But what other choice did he have? Become hunted? Clearly these people had a leg up on him.

The sound of tapping glass frightened him from his ponderings–he nearly fell out of bed. At his window, Samantha hovered. He heard her voice from the other side. “Let me in!” she said.

Daryl sighed and opened the window. “Hey Sam. Come on in.”

She came in with a six pack of beer. Daryl didn’t really like drinking, but tonight he felt like he needed one.

“You OK?” she asked as she handed him one. They sat on his bed and he stared down at his can. She popped hers open and took a swig. Daryl sighed again and popped his can open. “Nope…” he said.

He chugged the can. It tasted like garbage, but it was the only thing that made sense at that moment. She handed him another one.

“How much do you know?” he asked, as he popped the second.

“I saw you go to townhall and leave…” she said. “Judging by how quick you drank that, I can only guess what happened.”

He told her everything. They downed all six before he was done speaking. Daryl could tell that Sam was nervous. She barely looked at him. Her mind somewhere else. California?

“I don’t suppose they know about me?” she asked.

“He didn’t say anything… And neither did I,” said Daryl.

They sat there looking at the floor.

She stood up, used to drinking up until now, the three beers she had didn’t phase her. “Daryl I’m leaving tonight. No one is going to stop me. If I’m hunted, I’m hunted, but I have to take this opening.”

Daryl stood up, but he sat right back down. Three beers was still a lot for him. “You’re leaving…?”

“Of course, Daryl. I can’t stay here. I’ve been packed for a while now. I guess I’ll be leaving earlier than I thought.”

Daryl stared at the floor. His best friend was leaving him… He was all alone. About to be hunted by a secret organization…

“Hey! Chin up, Daryl. You get to be on a super hero team you always wanted.” Her joke fell flat and her smile faded as he glared at her.

“You’re leaving! You can shut…” Daryl spouted.

Before he could finish she kissed him hard on the mouth.

His eyes popped and before he knew it, it was over. She smiled. “Good bye, Daryl.” She slipped out the window and disappeared.

Daryl fell back on his bed. “Wooooooowwwww!” he said. He completely forgot about the man in the expensive suit.

Daryl! Wake up! said Kinder We need to strategise. I think we can run if we go now.

“Kinder?”

YES! It’s me! Who else?

“Run?”

Daryl: focus. We need to get out of here. We can outrun them. They will chase, but there is still so much I can teach you. You just have to let me take over and I can…

Daryl rose back up. Kinder had tried twice to take over his body. “No!” said Daryl. “I may be drunk, but I’m not stupid!”

Could of fooled me! We are caught! Wrap your head around that. But we can escape...

“Kinder, we will be chased forever if we run.”

You’re not seriously thinking of going quietly. There is no super hero team. There is just a man in a lab coat and a thousand tests that will unmake us.

Daryl sat there for a moment. He just wanted to think about Samantha some more.

If you give me control, I promise to give you back your body.

“Kinder, we’ve shared a body for four years now… And you have helped me a lot with my powers, but I still don’t trust you.”

I would have thought we were past that by now… said Kinder. He left Daryl alone. His absence was relieving, but part of him did feel bad about it. Originally Kinder wanted Daryl’s body to take revenge against Point Pleasant. And then he tried to take Samantha and Ben as well…

‘Benjamin Howder… I wonder what happened to him…’

Daryl shut his eyes. The beer was exhausting him. He didn’t mind; he was tired of thinking. Tired of trying to solve this problem. Should he run away, like Sam? Should he run away with Sam? If Crouse was unaware of her, it was going to stay that way.

He had three days to get his affairs in order. Then he would go quietly.
